Ellen Comes Home
Thursday, 27 April 2006
Image Today was an exciting day! Ellen and Chalase were able to leave the hospital and come home! Actually, to be honest, it was both exciting and a little bit scary. After all, there's no more secure feeling than having your baby in a hospital full of health care professionals. If anything goes wrong they're just a touch of a button away. But, everything has been going so well, so it was definitely time to go.

So... I gotta tell ya...when Chalase went into labor one of the tasks I was assigned was getting the child safety seat installed in her car. I have since learned that it's not a good idea to try and focus on something that involves instructions when your wife goes into labor. Honestly, I don't know how I managed to misinterpret the instructions so heinously, but the seat probably would have been more secure with duct tape and bailing twine! So obviously the first thing that needed to be done was to get the seat installed properly.

Then, I got to take the proud walk as a new papa with his wife in a wheelchair and Ellen in her arms drawing a beaming smile from each person we passed in the halls of the hospital. Most of the people we passed could clearly recognize it was our first trip home and you could see them reflecting on a similar memory in their life.

When we finally arrived at the car, the fun was over. How in the heck are you suppose to wrestle your little bundle of joy into that tiny seat? Ellen objected as soon as she was restrained. Perhaps the shoulder straps remind her of some torture she endured in a previous life? Who knows. As soon as we were on the road, she was pretty much out like a light. I remembered the same feeling of wanting to be cautious as I did driving Chalase to the hospital in labor. But it was much easier not having her screaming at me and punching my arm.

The drive homw went smooth as silk and it was a pretty cool feeling bringing Ellen through the door for the first time. Thankfully Stacy provided expert tutelage and was quickly able to quell many of the fears we had about being new parents and we quickly settled down into a nice routine.
